Why OMEOD?
OMEOD or One Meal Every Other Day has been reported by others that have already adapted to OMAD. The goal with OMEOD might be:
- 1. to break a plateau in their body weight loss
- 2. to treat an inflammatory condition.
- 3. to increase the chances of autophagy and/or
- 4. for spiritual reasons.
In this series of article, I am reporting my one-time OMEOD experiment. In other words, a 2-day fasting experiment. I have been doing OMAD for a long time. First, between 2009 and 2014 to lose weight. During that period I lost 28% of my body weight down to 19.2% of body fat, from my original 40%. More recently, I returned to OMAD for just over 1 year now, to rip all the benefits of autophagy, as well as reduce body weight again. Admittedly, I had gained some of the weight since I went back to 3 meals a day in 2014. My goal is to keep doing OMAD every day, for the rest of my life. This is because of its beneficial effects on longevity and vitality.
So, why would I do OMEOD now? This is an experiment to kickstart my fat loss since I am in a plateau at about 20% body fat. I have found it very difficult to go below and maintain my body fat below 20%. My body weight seems to slowly increase once I reach my lowest of 161lb (19.2% fat). At the start of this experience, I weighed 166.9lb and 20.7% fat. This is at the top of my range since I restarted OMAD a year ago. It seems that I am at my ideal weight. This is not much different than what I was at age 25. So I want to make it clear that I am perfectly happy at this weight. However, some have claimed that OMEOD might be an efficient way to break a plateau in body weight loss.
6 pack challenge
Since my early OMAD days, I have been doing 1 to 1 1/2 hr routines of calisthenics consisting of push-ups at different levels of intensity, and bench presses with 40lb dumbbells. I have also trained with pull-ups, but this exercise has triggered pain in my brachialis muscles. I have put much effort into changing my body, but I have failed to reveal a 6-pack abdomen. Clearly, I feel my underlying muscles to be strong. However, they are covered by a layer of fat that does not seem to go away.
I have already cut my carbs and sugar significantly, but that does not seem to reduce my abdominal fat. I have done OMAD for many months. But I seem to have reached a limit on its effects on my body fat, perhaps normal for my age. My understanding is that you need to reduce your body fat to 13% to have a distinct 6-pack appearance in the abdomen. Keep in mind that I am no expert in the matter, but if you are a regular guy, older than 50 years of age. IN the second part of this series, I will describe my experience with 2 days of fasting.
